Stairway to Heaven in Austria

-

“Stairway to Heaven” is a thrilling and somewhat intimidating feature of the protected climbing route on the Grosser Donnerkogel mountain in Austria. The Grosser Donnerkogel is part of Austria’s Dachstein mountain range in the Salzkammergut region, known for its stunning scenery.

The Via Ferrata: To reach the stairs, climbers must first tackle the Donnerkogel via Ferrata, a challenging but popular route. It involves climbing steel cables, ladders, and navigating exposed sections. Mountain guide Hans Müller explains, “The via Ferrata is designed to make climbing accessible to more people, but it still requires physical fitness and mental focus, especially on exposed sections.”

The Stairway to Heaven: The highlight of the climb is the “Stairway to Heaven” – a 40-meter-long vertical ladder suspended meters above the ground. It bridges the gap between Kleiner Donnerkogel and Grosser Donnerkogel. The ladder is secured to the rock face, and climbers are attached to a safety cable throughout the via Ferrata.

The Experience: Climbing this ladder is not for the faint of heart! It offers an adrenaline rush and incredible views, but it requires a strong tolerance for heights. Climbing expert Sarah Lindberg says, “The Stairway to Heaven is one of the most exhilarating features in the region. It’s a test of both physical ability and mental endurance, but for those who make it, the views are spectacular.”

Alternative Route: If the ladder seems too daunting, there is an alternative path, allowing climbers to reach the summit without facing this particular challenge.

Climbing the Stairway to Heaven is an unforgettable adventure for experienced climbers seeking a thrill. Just remember to be prepared and take all necessary precautions before attempting this iconic route.
