Chinese Professor Built a Mountain on a Skyscraper

-

Zhang Biqing, a professor of traditional Chinese medicine in Beijing, China, gained notoriety for constructing a mountain villa on top of a 26-story apartment building.

The Penthouse Project

In 2007, Professor Zhang purchased the penthouse apartment of a building in Beijing’s Ranji Mountain Residential Complex. Over the next six years, he transformed the 1,000 square-meter rooftop into his private mountain retreat.

Illegal Construction

Without obtaining any permits or consulting with building authorities or his neighbors, Zhang brought in tons of rocks, trees, and materials to create his rooftop oasis.

Neighbors’ Concerns

As construction progressed, residents grew increasingly concerned about the weight of the additional structure and the potential damage it could cause. They also complained about the noise and leaks. Photos of the unusual rooftop structure circulated online, sparking widespread debate about illegal construction, privilege, and the enforcement of regulations in China.

Demolition Order

Facing mounting pressure, authorities ordered Zhang to dismantle his creation within 15 days. In August 2013, the construction crew began tearing down the mountain villa.

Zhang claimed he wanted to create a peaceful retreat and escape the noise and pollution of the city. He explained, “I wanted to bring a touch of nature to the city and create a place where I could find peace amidst the chaos.” His mountain villa remains a poignant example of how far someone can go to pursue their vision.
