Fort Boyard in France.

-

Fort Boyard, a star-shaped giant off the French coast, boasts a unique history. Built by Napoleon in the early 1800s to defend against the British, it was ultimately outdated by the time it was finished. Fort Boyard’s military career was short-lived, but it has found new life as a famous game show setting.

Since 1990, the fort has been the battleground for the French game show “Fort Boyard.” Teams of celebrities compete in physical and mental challenges within the fort’s chambers, collecting keys and clues to reach the treasure chamber. The show’s success has been international, inspiring adaptations in over 30 countries.

The future of Fort Boyard is bright. With ongoing renovations, it’s set to open its doors to the public in 2028. Visitors can then explore the fort’s rich past and maybe even try their hand at some of the show’s iconic challenges.
