The Sigiriya rock, also known as the Lion Rock, is an ancient fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Sri Lanka.
Location
The huge boulder is located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, about 3-4 hours by road from Colombo, the capital city.
Historical Significance
King Kashyapa I (477-495 CE) built Sigiriya as his royal residence after seizing power. Choosing the site for its strategic defensive position and stunning views. After his death, the site became a Buddhist monastery.
Features
- The Rock: It’s a massive plateau that rises approximately 200 meters (660 feet) above the surrounding forest.
- Lion Gate: At the base of the final ascent to the summit, there is a monumental gateway flanked by lion paws, hence its name.
- Frescoes: The rock’s face is dressed up with ancient frescoes depicting women, thought to be the celestial nymphs or representations of the King’s consorts.
- The Summit: It features the ruins of the King’s palace, including a throne, swimming pool, and cisterns, showcasing advanced engineering.
