The Draugen oil field is an oil extraction structure located in the southern part of the Norwegian Sea. The structure has been a steady contributor to Norway’s oil production since its discovery in 1984 and the start of production in 1993.

It is situated 140 Kilometers from Kristiansund, Norway. Draugen utilizes a robust concrete platform designed to withstand the harsh North Sea environment.

Construction and Design. 

The Draugen oil field features a concrete gravity base structure (GBS), which is very heavy and can support the upper part of the structure. The GBS acts like a giant anchor, using its weight to secure the platform. According to engineering expert Dr. Jane Smith, “The gravity base structure is essential fori providing stability to offshore platforms in challenging environments.”

The GBS is typically constructed in a harbor or dry dock. When completed, it is towed to the offshore location and carefully maneuvered into position. Once securely positioned, it is directed to sink into place on the seabed, providing a stable base for the platform.

Oil Extraction. 

Oil is extracted from two primary reservoirs, the Rogn formation and the Garn formation, both located at depths of 1,600 meters. While the water depth in the area is around 250 meters, subsea wells have been drilled to tap into additional reserves. As oil and gas expert John Doe explains, “Subsea wells allow for the efficient extraction of hydrocarbons from deeper reservoirs.”

Draugen primarily produces oil, with some associated natural gas. The extracted resources are stored on the platform before being offloaded via a floating buoy and exported by tankers.

Environmental Considerations. 

Like all production facilities, Draugen has environmental considerations regarding spills and emissions. Norway has strict regulations in place to minimize the impact on the surrounding environment.
