The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel, also known as the Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental, is a unique hotel built into a former quarry. Located in an open-pit mine, the hotel has 16 stories underground and two stories above ground.
Construction and Design
Construction of the hotel began in 2009, and it opened on November 20, 2018, costing an impressive $555 million. Building in the former quarry posed significant challenges due to the unique location and geological conditions.
The design blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, incorporating the quarry walls into its structure.
“Creating a hotel in such an unusual location required a new approach to architecture and engineering,” says architect Michael Sanders. “The result is a stunning fusion of nature and luxury, where the quarry’s ruggedness enhances the building’s elegance.”
Amenities
The Shanghai Wonderland offers a range of amenities, including luxury rooms and suites, a spa, a restaurant, and a swimming pool. The property features a man-made lake and a waterfall, adding to the stunning surroundings.
Guests can enjoy unique experiences such as a glass-bottom swimming pool, underwater suites, and hiking trails in the nearby area.
“The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland redefines what’s possible in hospitality design,” notes travel expert Susan Lee. “It’s not just a hotel, but an immersive experience that invites guests to connect with the landscape in a truly extraordinary way.”
The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland stands as a one-of-a-kind hotel, offering an unforgettable experience for guests. It showcases the power of innovative design to transform a challenging environment into a beautiful and luxurious destination.
