What Makes It Special
Tianmen Cave is a massive opening in the cliff face of Tianmen Mountain, measuring 131.5 meters (431 feet) tall, 57 meters (187 feet) wide, and 60 meters (197 feet) deep.

It holds the title of the highest naturally formed arch in the world, perched at an impressive 1,518 meters (4,980 feet) above sea level.

Originally, this was not an archway but a regular cave until a cliff face collapsed in 236 AD, creating this dramatic opening.

According to Dr. Li Wei, a Chinese cultural historian, “Tianmen Cave’s formation is not only a geological wonder but also a cultural symbol that ties into ancient beliefs about the heavens and the emperor.”

To reach the cave itself, visitors must climb 999 steps, famously known as the “Stairway to Heaven.” In Chinese culture, the number nine symbolizes eternity and is associated with the emperor, making the journey spiritually significant.

Alternatively, visitors can ascend via the 99-bend Tongtian Avenue, a winding mountain road that leads to the summit. For those seeking a less strenuous option, a cable car ride offers stunning aerial views on the way up. This cableway is one of the longest passenger cable cars in the world.

Spiritual Significance

Tianmen Mountain has long been considered sacred in Chinese mythology, with the cave symbolizing a portal between the earthly and heavenly realms. Geologist Mei Zhang adds, “The spiritual and geological significance of Tianmen Cave makes it a unique site where nature and culture converge.”
